Like any other new year, January 2017 seems a very promising month for television, as so many networks have lined up treats for us, both here in the Philippines and abroad. So as a treat for all television junkies, here are some of the great things you can expect on the first month of 2017!


TV Debuts


Emerald City

EMERALD CITY | Official Trailer: Welcome to Emerald City
Network: NBC (United States), ETC (Philippines)
Starring: Adria Arjona, Ana Ularu, Vincent D'Onofrio
Premiere: January 6 (NBC), January 7 (ETC)

A modern re-imagining of L.Frank Baum's classic The Wizard of Oz, this show will brand itself as a collaboration of science and magic, mixing classic fashion and witchcraft with technological advancements.

Riverdale

Riverdale (The CW) Trailer HD

Starring: K.J. Apa, Cole Sprouse, Camila Mendes, Lili Reinhart
Premiere: January 26 (The CW)

Based off the classic Archie comic franchise, this live-version series is a more mature take, that includes adult themes such as sex, violence, and politics, something not seen on the beloved print versions. The premise of the story deals with a murder in which Archie (played by K.J. Apa) is suspected to be involved in. The series also deals with Archie's relationships with now-former best friend Jughead (played by Cole Sprouse) and his love interests, Betty (played by Lili Reinhart) and Veronica (Camila Mendes). Some characters from other affiliated comics such as Josie (from Josie and the Pussycats, played by Ashleigh Murray) will also appear on the series regularly.

TV Returns


Grimm

Grimm Season 6 "The Final Chapter Will Be Grimm" Promo (HD)

Starring: David Giuntoli, Russell Hornsby, Bitsie Tulloch, Silas Weir Mitchell. Sasha Roiz, Reggie Lee, Bree Turner, Claire Coffee
Return: January 6 (NBC), January 7 (Jack TV/Universal Channel)

Grimm embarks on its sixth and final season focusing on Diana, Adalind Schade (played by Claire Coffee)'s daughter. Also, Sean Renard (played by Sasha Roiz) who is now the mayor of the City of Portland, ordered the city's forces to catch the grimm, Nick Burkhardt (played by David Giuntoli). 

Scandal

Scandal Season 6 Trailer (HD)

Starring: Kerry Washington, Tony Goldwyn, Bellamy Young
Return: January 19 (ABC), TBA (Star World)

Following the season finale, Scandal goes into the campaign trail of First Lady and Senator and now Republican nominee Mellie Grant (played by Bellamy Young), as she is prepped for the multiple roadblocks ahead by the series' lead character Olivia Pope (played by Kerry Washington). The series also continues to delve into Olivia's relationship with President Fitzgerald Grant (played by Tony Goldwyn).

How To Get Away With Murder

We will learn more about Wes' (played by Alfred Enoch) death and the cause of the fire that destroyed Annalise's (played by Viola Davis) residence. We will also see more of the complications in the characters' personal lives, such as Michaela's (played by Aja Naomi King) relationship with her parents, as well as Connor (played by Jack Falahee) and Oliver's (played by Conrad Ricamora) true relationship status.

Supergirl

Starring: Melissa Benoist, Jeremy Jordan, Chyler Leigh, David Harewood
Return: January 23 (The CW), January 24 (ETC/Jack TV)

The series returns with new episodes, including Kara/Supergirl (played by Melissa Benoist) to travel to another planet, and Roulette (played by Dichen Lachmann) running another alien-themed moneymaker, similar to her alien cage-matches earlier in the season. The trailer also shows Winn (played by Jeremy Jordan, mostly on voiceovers) having doubts over his job at the DEO. The title of the episode, "Supergirl Lives" is a homage to the unreleased Superman film in which the episode's writer, Kevin Smith, also wrote.

The Flash

Starring: Grant Gustin, Danielle Panabaker, Carlos Valdes, Candice Patton, Jesse L. Martin
Return: January 24 (The CW), January 25 (ETC/Jack TV)

Cisco (played by Carlos Valdes) sees Iris (played by Candice Patton) being killed by one of The Flash's adversaries. Barry (played by Grant Gustin), Iris, Cisco and Caitlin (played by Danielle Panabaker) travel to the future in order to avoid the said happening. We also see Caitlin struggling to contain her newfound power.

Arrow

Arrow | Who Are You? Trailer | The CW

Network: The CW (United States), Jack TV/2nd Avenue/Warner TV Asia (Philippines)
Starring: Stephen Amell, Emily Bett Rickards, David Ramsey, Willa Holland
Return: January 25 (The CW), January 26 (Jack TV/2nd Avenue/Warner TV Asia)

Team Arrow welcomes Laurel Lance (played by Katie Cassidy) by throwing a celebration. Star City's District Attorney told Mayor Oliver Queen (played by Stephen Amell) that the Green Arrow (also played by Amell) was decepted. John Diggle (played by David Ramsey) is ready to face what he needs to face to. And, Laurel is not the friend that Oliver, Felicity (played by Emily Bett Rickards) and the others that used to know.

DC's Legends of Tomorrow

Starring: Victor Garber, Brandon Routh, Caity Lotz, Franz Drameh, Dominic Purcell, Maisie Richardson-Sellers, Amy Pemberton, Matt Letscher, Nick Zano
Return: January 24 (The CW), January 25 (Warner TV Asia)

The Legends once again faced the speedster, Eobard Thawne (played by Matt Letscher) and its allies, Damien Darhk (played by Neal McDonough) and Malcom Merlyn (played by John Barrowman) where three are part of a group called 'Legion of Doom' in order to save Captain Rip Hunter (played by Arthur Darvill) in which the Legion had captured after they travel through the time where the captain is. Also, DC's Legends of Tomorrow moves from Thursdays, to Tuesdays right after The Flash in the United States.

Supernatural

Following what happened on the midseason finale, Sam and Dean Winchester (played by Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles) are accused of doing something to the President of the United States, been captured and brought to a place that supposed to be doesn't exist. Meanwhile, we also see that Castiel (played by Misha Collins) and the brothers' mother Mary Winchester (played by Samantha Smith), worked together to find them. Also, Supernatural moves to a new timeslot in the United States, occupying the former timeslot of DC's Legends of Tomorrow.

UPDATE: Scandal and How To Get Away With Murder moves its season premiere and midseason return respectively, to January 26 in the U.S. as its broadcaster ABC will air a television special in its place.
